APPENDIX 1: QUALIFICATIONS IN LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Most of the qualifications that are fundamentally concerned with local economic development are at postgraduate level (first degrees in town planning or in economics have been excluded). Most programmes of study are available in part time or full time modes and take one or two years study to complete.

This listing of qualifications in local economic development is arranged by 'University of ...' followed by an alphabetical listing of the town in which the university is located (occasionally the name of the town comes first) with the exception of the Institution of Economic Development which is listed at the beginning of the sequence.

1 Institution of Economic Development (IED)

P O Box 396

High Wycombe

Bucks HP15 6EL

Diploma in Local and Regional Economic Development

The IED is the professional body for people working in the field of local and regional economic development. Their diploma is thus a professional qualification requiring registration with the IED, prior knowledge of a relevant specialism, an examination, a dissertation and proof of relevant professional training.

In order to extend the opportunity of gaining professional recognition, the IED has recently linked its professional diploma with a number of universities who offer courses in local economic development/urban regeneration. These include the universities of Birmingham, Cardiff, London School of Economics, Middlesex, Northumbria, Oxford Brookes and Sheffield Hallam.
